President Makes Education the Top Priority in FY13 Budget
President Obama has released his budget proposal for fiscal year 2013. Building on his top priority to boost the middle class and promote economic fairness, President Obama made clear in his budget that high-quality education is absolutely critical to rebuilding our economy, and that a strengthened American workforce requires that we continue to invest in education. The President’s emphasis on education is evidenced by the fact that education is targeted for the single largest percentage increase of any discretionary item in the entire federal budget. Protect Safe Routes to School
The current Senate transportation bill dilutes Safe Routes to School, walking and bicycling programs. Bicycle and pedestrian deaths make up 14% of all traffic fatalities, but only 1.5% of federal funds go towards making walking and biking safer. These programs provide funding for sidewalks, crosswalks, and bikeways that make streets safe for all users.Contact your Senator today and urge a vote in favor of the Cardin-Cochran amendment to the transportation bill to guarantee local governments a voice in transportation decisions, allowing them to build sidewalks, crosswalks, and bikeways that keep people safe.
Contact your Representative and Senators today and ask them to save our streets.
